Handmade, Functional Art

The name maddieyaki is inspired by the Japanese suffix yaki (焼き) meaning cooked over fire. Yes! The very same yaki that is used in yakisoba and taiyaki also indicates pottery from different regions (e.g., Karatsu-yaki, Arita-yaki), thus sparking maddieyaki.

Madelyn is a Cambodian-American artist from California who discovered pottery in high school but fell in love with it while living in a small coastal pottery town in Japan for nearly a year, where she studied and learned pottery focusing on the local style. She later deepened her practice in Cambodia, learning traditional techniques like the kick wheel and Cambodian motifs from local masters, finding a profound connection to her heritage through clay.
